PP Flame Retardant Sheet — Fire-Rated Material, Not Just a Fire-Rated Product
A flame-retardant sheet is not standard PP with a coating. The fire resistance is built into the polymer itself — a phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardant system compounded into the PP resin before extrusion. When exposed to flame, the FR additives promote char formation on the sheet surface, which insulates the underlying polymer and starves the combustion zone of fuel. The sheet self-extinguishes — typically within 10 seconds of flame removal — and does not produce flaming drips that could ignite materials below.
This is the material distinction that separates PPBOXY’s FR sheet from commodity PP sheet: it is sold as a material grade with documented fire test performance, not as a finished product. Fabricators, converters, and OEM manufacturers buy FR sheet to make things — partitions, enclosures, vehicle interior panels, electrical housings. PPBOXY supplies the FR sheet material with full test certification; the fabricator builds the end product.
For finished FR board applications in construction and signage, see PP Flame Retardant Board →, which covers application-specific formats including wind load ratings and print compatibility. For the complete PP sheet type comparison, see PP Sheet →.

How FR PP Sheet Achieves V-0 Without Halogens — The Phosphorus-Nitrogen System
Traditional flame retardants — brominated and chlorinated compounds — work by releasing halogen radicals that interrupt the combustion chain reaction in the gas phase. They are effective but problematic: the gases released (hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide) are toxic and corrosive, and halogenated FR additives are increasingly restricted under EU RoHS, REACH, and WEEE directives.
PPBOXY’s FR sheet uses a halogen-free phosphorus-nitrogen intumescent system that works through a completely different mechanism:
1. Char Formation (Condensed Phase)
When heated, the phosphorus compound decomposes to form phosphoric acid, which catalyzes the dehydration of the PP polymer into a carbonaceous char. The nitrogen compound decomposes to release inert gases (N₂, NH₃) that swell the char into a thick, insulating foam layer. This char layer physically separates the underlying polymer from the flame and oxygen.
2. No Flaming Drip
Standard PP melts and drips when exposed to flame — the dripping molten polymer can ignite materials below, spreading the fire vertically. The char layer formed by the FR system prevents the underlying polymer from melting and dripping. UL 94 V-0 certification requires zero flaming drips.
3. Low Smoke, No Toxic Gas
Halogenated FR systems produce dense, toxic smoke. The phosphorus-nitrogen system produces significantly less smoke (EN 13501-1 smoke classification: s1, the best possible rating) and no hydrogen halide gases. This is critical for applications in occupied spaces — building interiors, transit vehicles, public venues — where smoke inhalation, not flame contact, is the leading cause of fire fatalities.
Why “Halogen-Free” Matters Halogen-free compliance (IEC 61249-2-21: < 900 ppm total chlorine, < 900 ppm total bromine, < 1,500 ppm total halogens) is increasingly a procurement requirement for: EU construction products under Construction Products Regulation (CPR), transit vehicle interiors per EN 45545-2, electronic equipment enclosures per IEC 62368-1, and green building certifications (LEED, BREEAM, DGNB).

الأسئلة الشائعة
Q: What is the difference between this FR sheet page and the PP Flame Retardant Board page?
This page covers FR PP sheet as a material grade — UL 94 / LOI / EN 13501 test specifications, the halogen-free FR chemistry, and fabrication methods. It is for buyers who need FR sheet material to manufacture their own products. The PP Flame Retardant Board page covers finished FR board applications — construction partitions, transit vehicle interiors, trade show booth walls — with application-specific information like wind load ratings and print compatibility. If you are buying raw material for fabrication, you are on the right page.
Q: Is UL 94 V-0 the same as “fireproof”?
No — and this distinction is important. UL 94 V-0 means the material self-extinguishes within 10 seconds after flame removal and does not produce flaming drips. It does not mean the material will not burn — no polypropylene is non-combustible. V-0 means the material resists ignition, self-extinguishes rapidly, and does not spread fire through dripping. For applications requiring non-combustible materials (e.g., structural building elements), mineral-based boards (calcium silicate, magnesium oxide) are required, not PP.
Q: Is the FR sheet halogen-free?
Yes. PPBOXY’s FR sheet uses a phosphorus-nitrogen intumescent flame retardant system that contains no bromine, chlorine, or other halogens. It complies with IEC 61249-2-21 halogen-free requirements (< 900 ppm Cl, < 900 ppm Br, < 1,500 ppm total halogens). This is important for EU construction products, transit vehicle interiors, and green building certifications that increasingly require halogen-free materials.
Q: Can FR PP sheet be recycled?
Yes. The phosphorus-nitrogen FR additives do not interfere with the PP #5 recycling stream. FR PP sheet can be ground, pelletized, and re-extruded alongside standard PP. Unlike halogenated FR systems, there is no risk of corrosive gas generation during reprocessing. PPBOXY accepts back used FR sheet from volume customers for recycling.
Q: What thickness should I use for a construction partition or electrical enclosure?
Construction partitions: 5–6 mm for standard wall protection; 8–10 mm for structural partitions and high-traffic areas. Electrical enclosures: 3–5 mm for internal component barriers; 6–8 mm for external enclosures requiring impact resistance. Contact PPBOXY with your specific fire rating requirement, span, and loading condition for a thickness recommendation.
Q: What is the minimum order quantity?
We do not have a strict minimum order quantity. Whether you need a small trial order or a large-volume shipment, we can accommodate your requirements. Contact us with your preferred specifications, quantity, and destination, and our team will provide a customized quotation and the most cost-effective shipping solution.
